Peasants ask for legal certainty for land and cease evictions in Guatemala

A hundred Guatemalan peasants were stationed today in the outskirts of the Presidential Palace in the capital to demand that the government of the country's president, Jimmy Morales, stop the evictions and that gives them legal certainty about the lands they occupy.

Guatemala, Nov 27 (EFE) .- A hundred Guatemalan peasants were stationed today outside the Presidential Palace in the capital to demand the government of the country's president, Jimmy Morales, cease the evictions and give them legal certainty about the lands they occupy.

The peasants, mostly from several communities in the northern department of Alta Verapaz, installed awnings and keep blocked the passage of vehicles through the sector, where there is also a police presence, said Efe.

One of the leaders of the Peasant Committee of Development of the Altiplano (Ccda), Marcelo Sabuc, explained to journalists that the protest was called as a measure of pressure for the Government to end the "forced evictions" in several departments of the interior of the country and grant them legal certainty about the lands they occupy.

Peasants from the departments of Alta Verapaz, Petén participate in the demonstration (north), Quiché (northwest), Escuintla (South) and Santa Rosa (southeast).

According to Sabuc, they are willing to stay in place until they get answers to their demands.

"We have months of dialogue with the Land Fund and the Secretariat of Affairs Agrarian but we have not had any positive answers. Libertad, in Cobán (Alta Verapaz), assured Efe that they will remain indefinitely outside the Presidential Palace because "the government turns a deaf ear."

"We ask that you not continue the evictions of our communities and that the Government give us a solution, "he said.

So far no government authority has ruled on the protest campesina.

On November 2, the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR) in Guatemala and the Office of the Human Rights Procurator showed their concern about the evictions recently carried out by the security forces in Lívingston (Izabal) and Tactic (Alta Verapaz), and requested that the guarantees for families be respected peasants.

"Oacnudh expresses his concern about eviction in the Chabilchoch community, Izabal, without a plan for the resettlement of families, and measures are needed to ensure their human rights," said the entity in a message through social networks.
