The Itaipú hydroelectric plant launches a biogas plant to supply its vehicles

The Itaipú Hydroelectric Power Plant, which Brazil and Paraguay share, inaugurated its first generation unit of biomethane this week, produced with a mixture of remnants of the sewerage, leftovers of food and grass, as confirmed by official sources today.

Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil), Nov 22 (EFE) .- The Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant, which Brazil and Paraguay share, inaugurated its first generation unit of biomethane this week. mixture of remains of the sewer system, leftovers of food and grass, as confirmed by official sources today.

The unit, baptized as an Innovation Center in Electric Mobility Sustainable (CI-MES), it can produce 300 cubic meters of biomethane per day, enough to supply more than the 77 vehicles of the hydroelectric fleet.

The CI-MES is the where the vehicles that operate in the hydroelectric plant are supplied, which on Monday achieved the historic record of 2,500 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of production accumulated.

"We have waste to make other projects, one idea would be that the Mayor of Foz do Iguaçu could use it (biogas)," explained the director president of the program, Rodrigo Régis, who stated that he has also raised the possibility of supplying the buses that tourists take to the famous Iguaçu Waterfalls.

"This project makes comparable to what is done in countries like Germany, Austria, Italy and others that have advanced biogas policies, "said Régis.

The biogas plant was designed to receive 600 kilos of food waste, 1.5 tons of grass and 10 cubic meters of sewer system.

Since its inauguration for tests, 26,316 cubic meters of biogas, which saved 37,669 liters of ethanol and prevented the emission of 22.4 tons of greenhouse gases.
