The Ecuadorian airline TAME, in serious financial problems due to a heavy debt, announced the increase of its flights to the Galapagos Islands in search of greater profitability in that tourist destination, the most important in the South American country.

Quito, Nov 22 (EFE) .- The Ecuadorian airline TAME, in serious financial problems following a heavy debt, announced the increase of its flights to the Galapagos Islands in search of a higher profitability in that tourist destination, the most important in the South American country.

From December 11, TAME will create a direct route between Quito, the Andean capital of and the Baltra Island of the Galapagos, without the usual stopover in the coastal city of Guayaquil, the company said in a statement.

The new itinerary includes three weekly flights (Monday, Friday and Sunday) from the airport "Mariscal Antonio José de Sucre" in the sector of Tababela, bordering Quito, to the airport of Baltra Island, neighboring Santa Cruz, the most populated by the Ecuadorian archipelago.

The Galápagos, located in the Pacific Ocean about a thousand kilometers west of the continental coasts of Ecuador, is one of the main tourist attractions of Ecuador and TAME has it as a destination since 1964.

Between January and October of this year the Ecuadorian flag carrier has transported 97,463 passengers to the Baltra airport.

TAME also has a frequency to the airport of San Cristobal Island, the easternmost of the archipelago.

Formed by 13 large islands, 6 minor and 42 islands islets, the Galapagos contain a unique fauna and flora in the world, both terrestrial and marine, and is the habitat of the giant tortoises to which it owes its name.

For its rich biodiversity, is considered a natural laboratory that allowed the English scientist Charles Darwin to develop his theory on the evolution and natural selection of species.
