Zara will appeal the ruling linked to a case of degrading employment in Brazil in 2011

Zara Brazil will appeal the decision of a Brazilian labor court that considers that the company is responsible for a case of degrading or analogous work to the slavery registered in its productive chain in that country in 2011.

Sao Paulo, Nov 15 (EFE). - Zara Brazil will appeal the decision of a Brazilian labor court that considers that the company is responsible for a degrading or analogous work case slavery registered in its production chain in that country in 2011.

The decision of the Labor Regional Court of Sao Paulo responds to a complaint of August 2011, when the Ministry de Trabajo found 16 employees of different Latin American nationalities working for Aha Industria y Comercio, a supplier of Zara Brasil, under irregular conditions, with schedules excessive and in environments without ventilation.

The company then argued that the anomalies were the responsibility of its supplier, who diverted their production without their knowledge or consent, breaching the code of conduct that the Spanish multinational has for manufacturers and suppliers.

However, Judge Ricardo Artur Costa Trigueiros considers "impossible" that Zara did not know these working conditions and points out the existence of a "convenient blindness," according to a statement from the Labor Prosecutor's Office of Brazil.

Zara Brazil announced today that it will appeal the decision before the Superior Labor Court and recalled that the supplier Aha Industria y Comercio was responsible at the time for the irregularities.

"This isolated situation of a supplier in 2011 does not reflect the supervision system of the Zara production chain in Brazil, which is supervised by the Ministry Work Audience, "the company said in a statement.
