Varela presents results report of his official visit to China

Panama, Nov 27 (EFE) .- The Panamanian President, Juan Carlos Varela, presented today a report of the achievements and agreements signed in his recent first official visit to China after the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

"There were seven days of an intense but very productive agenda, with 19 agreements signed and more than 30 meetings with authorities and entrepreneurs to implement the agreements and strengthen ties "with China, Varela told reporters in an auditorium of the Panamanian presidency.

Varela said that of the total number of agreements signed, more than ten are related to the economic, commercial and tourism, highlighting the one signed to establish a direct air connection with Asia through an Air flight China from Beijing to Panama as of March 2018.

Having obtained that air connection is a "timely achievement" for Panama that will boost tourism between both countries, with the designation of Panama as an approved tourist destination by China.

He explained that an agreement was signed in commercial matters that establishes the basis for dialogue for the signing of a treaty. of free trade that will take place in the future, while anticipating that it is expected that soon the Panamanian Ministry of Economy and Finance will close agreements for the first issue of bonds in the Asia market.

In infrastructure, it was agreed to take the first steps to carry out feasibility studies for the construction of a railroad from Panama City to Panama City. David, capital of the province of Chiriquí, on the border with Costa Rica.

He explained that the Panama David train is a vision that this Government wants to leave with its feasibility studies, its estimated costs and its route, after also indicating that it will be built "using the resources of an expanded Canal" and with the technology and financing capacity of China.

According to the president, in this issue an important advance was made and it is expected that this December will announce the name of the company that will be in charge of the feasibility study for the train, to start its construction in 2022.

He added that agreements were also signed on migration and visa issues, of which the diplomatic and consular offices in China they are prepared to issue 30,000 for visitors who want to go to Panama and that could go up to 100,000 for tourists and investors.

For all the agreements signed there will be "to draw the road map to ensure its execution," said Varela.

The Panamanian leader said that the visit to China, which he described as "historic", will mark a "before and a later "in the relations between both nations.

He highlighted that China, for its part, sees Panama as a logistics center that will allow it to expand its presence throughout Latin America. for its air, maritime connectivity and, above all, for its logistics platform.

On November 16, Varela opened the first Embassy of Panama in China, within the framework of its historic visit to Beijing after the recent establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.

Varela announced last June the recognition of "one China" and broke the diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
