Unicef ​​warns that one in four children makes child labor in Paraguay

These data were extracted from the Multiple Indicator Survey by Conglomerates (MICS), specialized in childhood and reproductive health, held for the first time in Paraguay between June and September 2016 in 8,000 homes throughout the country. country and published this week.

This reality is accentuated much more in rural areas of the country, where 39.6% of children perform child labor, by 16.9% of those who reside in urban areas.

In that sense, it is also in rural areas where children are more exposed, in 25.1% of cases, to dangerous conditions during the performance of those economic or domestic activities, by 8% of the cities.

In matters of sex, there are more men who work as minors, 32.8% of the respondents, by 19.7% girls and adolescents.

Although it is true that Paraguay has improved its policies for the protection of minors in child labor, according to data published in September in a report prepared by the US Department of Labor. He pointed out that of the minors who carry out economic or domestic activities in the South American country, 35.1% do not surpass the primary education level.

With regard to the scale social, poverty levels are directly related to child labor.

Of the levels established in the study, in the "poorest" quintile, 40% of children work, by 35.7% of the next level, 20.6% of the intermediate level, 16.5% second richest and 11.1% of those under the "richest" level.

United Nations data they indicate that 168 million children between 5 and 17 years of age worked in the world in 2012, and more than half of the children who work carry out hazardous work.
