Tourism can not be in the hands of political swings, according to hoteliers

Tourism can not be in the hands of political swings, since its complexity, as in any business, needs a strategy with a long-term vision, according to the vice president for Spain by Meliá Hotels International, Alfonso del Poyo.

Madrid, Oct 4 (EFE) .- Tourism can not be in the hands of political swings, as its complexity, as in any business, needs a strategy with a long-term vision, according to the vice president for Spain of Meliá Hotels International, Alfonso del Poyo.

The tourist industry requires a specialization and the public administrations both at the state as well as regional and municipal levels, have to take a different turn from what they have had so far, Del Poyo added in his speech at a summit panel on tourism purchases that ends today in Madrid.

Tourism plans have not only not been enough so far, but above all, they have not been strategic and the sector must be treated with a long term vision.

It is not a receipt that every six months "we have to re-tell a new director of all problems of the tourism sector", so it is necessary that the companies make an effort so that the public-private partnership "takes us to that good doing".

The president of the Hotusa group, Amancio López, has shown the same line, bet on a closer public-private partnership and against the policies of "occurrences" and, instead, has opted for long-term policies that protect and strengthen the tourist destinations.

Del Poyo has opined that, for there to be quality tourism, there must be a quality destination, where cities in themselves are strong and good promoted, with sufficient resources and a strategic plan that is out of any swing.

In his opinion, there is no mention of tourism in the countries, but of the cities and these are competitive, there has to be an individualized promotion of each one.

What every city needs is having a good level of customer segmentation and being seasonally adjusted, for what needs to grow in promotion and possibly a tourist tax is a way to do so, if used responsibly, has targeted.

In some cities such as Barcelona, "we have not seen its responsible use and we are not happy with the distribution that is made with it," criticized Del Poyo.

In addition, we need to have security that the changes of the political formations and governments do not modify the rate and that this one in x years continue to have the same end.

However, the president of Hotusa has been shown contrary to tourist rates, which he sees as a threat to urban tourism, along with the loss of the identity of large cities, to the extent that, sometimes, one doubts whether is in the center of London or Paris, being surrounded by the same brands and franchises.

Another problem is Madrid's still low international connectivity -4 and 3 times lower than London and Paris, respectively - and Barcelona with long-haul destinations, making it difficult for tourists to arrive at a higher level of purchase, although they acknowledge that with Europe, Spain is well connected.

Spain is also the country among the top tourist destinations in Europe, with less luxury hotels, although the picture is changing and Del Poyo hopes that the new openings planned in Madrid will attract nationalities that previously did not plan to come to the capital.

López has also defended the level of employment in the sector, considered by some to be very low, and stressed that hoteliers have the challenge of training and loyalty to their workers, but the biggest problem they face is finding staff who are involved with the company.
