The EC will formalize the renewal of glyphosate next December 12

The European Commission (EC) will formalize the decision to renew the license of glyphosate on December 12, date in which it will also respond to the European Citizens' Initiative (ICE) registered to request its prohibition, driven by environmental organizations.

Brussels, Nov 28 (EFE) .- The European Commission (EC) will formalize the decision to renew the license of glyphosate on December 12, date in which it will also respond to the Initiative European Citizen (ICE) registered to ask for its ban, promoted by environmental organizations.

This was explained today by community spokesperson Mina Andreeva at the daily press conference of the EC, who said that on that day the Community Executive "will present other related initiatives" with the controversial herbicide.

The European Union (EU) achieved this Monday, after several meetings without consensus, an agreement for the renewal of the glyphosate license, with the support of 18 countries and just two weeks after the expiration of its current authorization, valid until the next December 15.

"The EC is satisfied with the results and will formalize this decision on December 12," Andreeva said.

Asked if the EC has drawn conclusions of this type of procedure, known as "comitology" and in which the Community Executive exercises legislative powers with the assistance of representatives of the countries through expert committees, Andreeva said that the EC has already proposed "change those rules".

In this case, renewal of the license has cost more than two years of meetings to reach finally an agreement, which has not satisfied ten countries - the nine that voted against, including Belgium or France, and Portugal, which abstained - nor the industry, which claimed a license for another 15 years.

Faced with a first proposal to renew it for 15 years and a second of ten years, the EC was forced to reduce it to five, given the pressures of the countries, environmental organizations and the European Parliament itself (PE), which requested in a non-legislative resolution the progressive elimination of the herbicide by 2022.

"We have tried constantly look for a solution to have a majority support, going down from 15 to five years ", Andreeva added, which justified the final proposal made by the EC.

On the other hand, the Health spokesman Anca Paduraru recalled in the press conference that, despite this renewal, "the authorization of products based on glyphosate is the responsibility of the Member States and they are who decide if the products enter their markets or not. "

The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, has already assured that in his country the ban will be more immediate," at most in three years ", while Belgium, which also opposed the herbicide, has announced that it will come into contact with other countries opposed to glyphosate to" look for alternatives ".

On the other hand In addition, more than one million citizens from seven countries have supported the ECI that asks the Member States to ban glyphosate, the minimum necessary for the EC to be obliged to give an answer.

The EC is simply obliged to react, although in no case to take into account the request.
