Argentina says that the "final balance" of the Mercosur-EU agreement is already negotiated

The Government of Argentina assured today that the negotiations between the Mercosur and the European Union (EU) entered the stage of search of the "final balance" of the free trade agreement, a pact that local industrialists look between hope and suspicion.

Buenos Aires, Nov 16 (EFE). - The Government of Argentina assured today that the negotiations between the Mercosur and the European Union (EU) entered the stage of search of the "final balance" of the free trade agreement, a pact that local industrialists look at between hope and suspicion.

"We are already at a stage where we are going to negotiate the final balance of the agreement", said the Secretary of International Economic Relations of Argentina, Horacio Reyser, in a meeting organized by the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA), the largest employers of the country South American.

The EU and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) concluded their fifth round of talks in Brasilia last Friday since the negotiations resumed formally, in May 2016.

The next round will be held from November 29 to December 5 in Brussels and the parties maintain the goal of closing an understanding before it ends. the year.

Reyser, in charge of the negotiations on behalf of Argentina, said that currently the talks cover 87% of the trade and the goal is to reach 90% for that the pact is truly considered as free trade.

According to the diplomat, in this section of the negotiation, Mercosur seeks to incorporate into the agreement about 200 products, mainly agricultural, which are now out and achieve an increase in quotas for access to the European market.

He said that there is also a "strong negotiation" in rules of origin and in issues such as intellectual property, government purchases and services.

He said that, in addition to increasing trade flow, the agreement with the EU, a block that represents about 20% of the Global GDP, will bring other "many benefits", such as participating in global value chains, increased investment in Argentina, greater value for local companies and growth of the employment.

The secretary of the UIA, Alberto Álvarez Saavedra, expressed his "hope" of "going towards a better and bigger trade" based on this agreement, which has been negotiated since April. 2000.

At the meeting, where representatives from different industrial sectors presented their position, the UIA's executive director, Diego Coatz, put the accent on the current deficit industrial trade of Argentina.

"When we talk about negotiations, we talk about generating genuine currencies to reduce this deficit, a deficit that has China, Brazil and The EU. Adrián Makuc, said that, from the beginning, "the negotiation was always unbalanced in favor of the EU".

From his point of view, "that imbalance that always existed" has been added now to a "hurry" to reach an agreement before the end of the year.

"This put us in a situation where the best we can do is to control or minimize the damage of this agreement, not only in trade of goods but also for the other chapters of the negotiation, "he said.

Makuc demanded that Mercosur enforce special and differential treatment for certain sectors of the South American bloc as the "guiding principle" of the negotiations.
